Integral Color: Mixed in the Truck, Permanent for the Life of the Slab
Integral color is pigment added to the concrete in the ready-mix truck before it hits your driveway. The pigment, almost always synthetic iron oxide, is distributed evenly through the entire slab. The color goes all the way through. Sand-blast the surface to bare aggregate ten years from now and the color underneath is the same.
This is the right method for any horizontal slab that has to last. Driveways. Patios. Pool decks. Walkways. Anything that takes UV, freeze-thaw, road salt, lawn fertilizer, snow-melt, and the occasional dropped grill.
Integral comes with constraints. The color load is mixed by weight at a percentage of the cementitious content, usually 1 to 7%. Above 7% the pigment starts to weaken the concrete itself. So integral color is available in earth tones, charcoals, rusts, slate-grays, and warm tans, but not in saturated bright reds or trafficked turquoise. If you want a bright color, integral cannot deliver it without compromising slab strength.

Acid Stain: Chemical Reaction with the Surface, Variegated and Permanent
Acid stain is a metallic-salt solution that you apply to the cured concrete surface and let react with the calcium hydroxide in the concrete. The reaction etches color into the top millimeter or two of the slab. The result is variegated, mottled, marbled, every slab looks slightly different and you cannot get a perfectly uniform color the way you can with integral.
That marbling is the whole point. Acid stain gives concrete the visual depth of natural stone. We use it most on patios that get pattern accents, on stamped slabs where we want the color to settle into the joint detail, and on interior basement floors where the depth and richness sells the upgrade.
Acid stain holds permanently in the etched layer once neutralized and sealed, but the surface needs a sealer. Without sealer the stained surface will scuff and wear in a Minnesota winter. We seal acid stains with a solvent-based acrylic, then schedule a re-seal at year three.
Acid stain colors are limited to the chemistry: rust browns, deep blacks, blue-greens, ambers. No bright colors. The chemistry is what it is.
Water-Based Dye: Fast, Vivid, but Needs Protection
Water-based concrete dyes use micron-sized pigments suspended in a water carrier. The dye penetrates the surface a fraction of a millimeter and sits there. Application is fast, the color comes up immediately rather than developing over hours like acid stain, and the available palette is wider: real reds, oranges, blues, and saturated greens that acid stain cannot produce.
The catch is durability. Dye is a thin surface treatment. On an outdoor southern Minnesota slab subjected to UV and salt, an unsealed dye will start to fade visibly within one season. Even with a quality sealer it needs re-application on a tighter schedule than acid stain or integral color.
We use dyes for interior polished concrete floors (basements, polished garage floors, walkout lower levels) where UV and salt are not in play, and for accent borders on stained slabs where we need a specific brand color the chemistry of acid stain cannot deliver.
How We Decide on Your Project
For a typical residential pour we walk through it like this:
- Outdoor horizontal slab, you want a permanent earth-tone color. Integral color, full stop. We sample-board the color before the pour.
- Outdoor slab, you want variegated stone-look depth. Integral base color in a tan or charcoal, then acid stain accent for the variegation, then sealer.
- Interior floor, polished concrete, you want a specific designer color. Polish the slab, then water-based dye applied during the polishing stages, then densifier, then guard.
- Stamped slab, you want the joints to read darker than the field. Integral color in the mix, release powder during stamping (this is itself a colorant), then acid-stain accent in the joints during the seal coat.
What to Avoid
Surface paint products marketed as “concrete stain” at big-box stores are a different category. They are essentially deck-stain formulations adapted to concrete and they sit on top of the slab as a film. On a Minnesota driveway they will peel inside two seasons. They are fine on a covered patio or interior floor but they are not what concrete contractors mean by “stain.”
Also avoid color jobs where the contractor will not pour a sample board. The cured color is never exactly what the wet color looks like. The sample board is the only way to lock in what you actually approved.
Maintenance: The Part Most Homeowners Skip
Integral color is the only method that does not require maintenance for the color itself. The slab is the color. Acid stain and dye both need sealer, and sealer needs re-application every two to three years in Minnesota. Skipping the re-seal is how decorative concrete fades.
