Base prep is where patios are won or lost

Most concrete patio failures in Minnesota come from the base, not the concrete itself. A slab sitting on poorly compacted fill, organically rich native soil, or uneven grade will settle, crack, and tip within a few seasons regardless of how good the mix design was. Pouring Praises excavates to the depth the site demands, removes material that will not support a slab, and compacts the base in lifts before any concrete goes in.

Steel reinforcement is standard on every patio we pour. Half-inch rebar on 18-inch centers is our baseline spec. On patios with more than 400 square feet, irregular shapes, or areas that will carry heavy planters, furniture, or hot tubs, we adjust the reinforcement schedule accordingly. The rebar sits off the base on chairs so concrete flows around and beneath it, embedding the steel properly in the slab’s midpoint.

Finish choices include a standard brushed texture for grip, an exposed aggregate look that blends into a natural landscape, or stamped concrete patterns that replicate stone, slate, tile, or wood. We apply a penetrating sealer after cure to protect the surface against Minnesota freeze-thaw cycling and UV degradation. We also set control joints at intervals that keep any future cracking from forming randomly.

Drainage planning is part of every patio we install. We slope the slab away from the foundation at a minimum of one-eighth inch per foot. Where grade conditions require it, we recommend a trench drain at the transition from patio to lawn. A patio that drains toward your foundation is not finished correctly, regardless of how it looks.

Three Directions for Your Patio Surface

Brushed Broom Finish

A standard light broom texture creates a slip-resistant surface that works in every climate. Clean, straightforward, and maintenance-free. The right choice for most residential patios where function matters more than decorative effect.

Stamped Concrete

Pattern mats pressed into the wet slab replicate the look of flagstone, slate, cobblestone, or brick. Color hardener or integral pigment adds depth. We apply a film-forming sealer to protect the finish and restore sheen after cure.

Exposed Aggregate

A surface retarder is applied to the fresh slab. After the concrete sets, we wash the top layer of cement paste off to reveal the stone aggregate beneath. The result reads as natural, textured, and blends well with landscaping and natural yard materials.

Colored Concrete

Integral color pigment mixed into the pour produces a uniform tone throughout the slab thickness. Unlike surface-applied color, integral pigment does not fade unevenly or peel. It is the correct approach for any patio where color consistency matters long term.

How thick should a concrete patio be?

Four inches is the standard for residential patios under normal use. We go to five inches for patios that will carry a hot tub, a heavy grill, or a large outdoor kitchen structure. Thickness is matched to load requirements, not picked arbitrarily. We assess the use case before finalizing the spec.

Do you handle permits?

In most Rochester-area jurisdictions, a concrete patio does not require a building permit if it sits at grade and is not attached to the structure. Some municipalities differ. We advise you on local requirements before the project starts and can coordinate with the city if a permit is needed.

How long before I can use the patio?

Light foot traffic is safe after 24 to 48 hours in normal summer conditions. Full cure, meaning the concrete has reached design strength, takes 28 days. We recommend waiting 7 days before placing heavy furniture and 28 days before setting a hot tub or any substantial load on the surface.

How do you prevent cracking?

Control joints cut into the slab direct any future cracking to a predictable location. Proper base compaction eliminates differential settlement as a crack source. Half-inch rebar keeps any cracks that do form tight and in plane. None of these are optional on a properly built patio, and none of them are steps we skip to save time.

Can an existing patio be resurfaced instead of replaced?

If the existing slab is structurally sound, flat, and has no significant cracks or settlement, an overlay or resurfacing is possible. If the base is compromised or the slab has shifted, resurfacing adds material on top of a problem that will continue to move. We assess the existing slab first and tell you honestly which direction makes sense.

What does a concrete patio cost compared to pavers?

Concrete is almost always less expensive per square foot to install than a quality paver system. Over time, concrete also requires less maintenance, does not shift or settle the way individual pavers do, and does not have joint gaps where weeds grow and sand washes out.
