Base & Prep
We do not pour on what we cannot stand on.
Four inches of compacted Class 5 base, grade set for drainage, vapor barriers where the spec calls for them. Luck gets you through one winter. Prep gets you through twenty.

Reinforcement
Half-inch steel rebar. Every slab.
Wire mesh lifts when you walk a wet pour. Half-inch steel on sixteen-inch centers, sitting dead-center in the slab, right where freeze-thaw stress wants to split it.

Control joints saw-cut within twelve hours. Hand-troweled to a hairline flatness. Cured under tarp when weather demands. No touch-ups after we leave.

Do you handle the prep work yourself?
We handle it all. Topsoil strip, excavation to depth, grading for drainage, and four inches of compacted Class 5 base. We don’t sub the prep out because the prep decides whether your slab holds or cracks.
What reinforcement do you use, and why?
Half-inch steel rebar on sixteen-inch centers, placed on chairs so it sits dead-center in the slab. Wire mesh is cheaper but it lifts during the pour and ends up at the bottom where it does nothing for tensile stress.
How does your concrete hold up to Minnesota winters?
Freeze/thaw survival is engineered, not hoped for. Air-entrained mix, proper cure time before first freeze, control joints within 12 hours, and positive drainage so water never sits on the slab.

A patio sits in the worst possible spot for concrete: out in the open, soaking up sun all summer and ice all winter, right up against the foundation where bad drainage does the most damage. That is exactly why so many patios crack, pit, and pull away from the house within a few years. They were poured thin, on dirt, with the slab pitched the wrong way. We pour patios the other way around. Four inches of compacted Class 5 base, half-inch rebar tied and set dead-center, and the whole slab graded to carry water away from your foundation instead of toward it. That last part alone is the difference between a patio that stays put and one that heaves.
Because a patio is something you look at every day, the finish gets real attention. You can take it broom for grip around a pool, smooth for a clean modern look, exposed-aggregate for texture and traction, or stamped to read like slate or stone. We can seal it on request to lock out moisture and bring up the color, which matters more here than in most places because sealer is part of how a patio shrugs off freeze-thaw and de-icer. Whatever the finish, the joints are saw-cut on a clean layout so the slab cracks where we tell it to, in a straight line you will never notice, instead of jagged across the middle of where your table goes.
Southern Minnesota is the reason we build patios this heavy. The freeze-thaw swing here pulls water into any pore or crack and splits it open, and a patio takes that abuse with no roof over it and no heat under it. We use an air-entrained mix made for that movement, give it real cure time before the first hard freeze, and grade everything to drain. The patios people regret are almost always the ones that came out too small. A slab big enough for two chairs looks fine empty and feels cramped the first time you put a table, a grill, and a few guests on it. When we come out, we talk through how you actually plan to use the space: where the door swings, where the sun lands in the evening, whether you want room for a fire pit or a dining set or just a quiet corner. It costs very little more to pour the right size the first time, and it costs a small fortune to bolt on an addition later that never quite matches the original. We would rather you build it once and build it right.
A patio also rarely stands alone. It usually ties into a walk that comes around the house, a set of steps off the back door, or a future pool deck, and those pieces look best when they are planned together and finished to match. We can pour the whole outdoor-living package in one coordinated project so the joints line up, the finishes agree, and the drainage all works as one system instead of three slabs fighting each other over where the water goes. If you are doing it in stages, we set the first pour up so the next one ties in clean, no awkward seam and no mismatched color where the new meets the old.
Once it is in, a patio asks for almost nothing: sweep it, rinse it, and reseal it every couple of years to keep the color up and the freeze-thaw out.
