Pouring Praises started because the owners got tired of watching other crews cut corners. Cheap base prep, no rebar, minimal control joints, and inadequate drainage are the four fastest ways to get a concrete surface that looks fine for two seasons and then starts cracking, heaving, and settling before the warranty is up. We do not build that way.
Every residential job we take starts with site prep. We excavate to the depth the project demands, remove material that will not support a slab, compact the base in layers, and set forms that give us the drainage slope we want before a single yard of concrete is ordered. Steel rebar goes in at 18-inch centers as our baseline. We adjust the reinforcement schedule if the application calls for it, but we do not pour flatwork without steel.
Finish options include a standard brushed broom texture, stamped patterns that replicate stone or slate, exposed aggregate for a natural look, and colored concrete with integral pigment or acid staining. We apply a penetrating sealer after cure to protect the surface against Minnesota freeze-thaw cycling. A Rochester winter tests concrete every year, and properly built and sealed concrete passes that test decade after decade.

Most concrete contractors use wire mesh instead of rebar because it is cheaper and faster. Wire mesh sits on the ground, not in the mid-depth of the slab where it actually reinforces. We use half-inch rebar on chairs, placed where it can do the job it is supposed to do.
Base Prep First
A concrete slab is only as good as what is under it. We excavate, remove poor material, and compact the base before any concrete is ordered. Skipping this step is how patios settle in three years.

Do you handle excavation and base prep?
Yes. Site preparation is the foundation of a concrete project that lasts. We handle excavation, removal of unsuitable material, and base compaction before any forms go in. This is not a step we subcontract or skip to save time.
Why do you use rebar instead of wire mesh?
Wire mesh is placed flat on the ground before the pour, which means it ends up at the bottom of the slab rather than in the middle where it can actually reinforce the concrete in tension. Half-inch rebar on chairs sits at the correct depth throughout the pour. The cost difference is real but so is the performance difference over a 20-year span.
How does Minnesota’s climate affect concrete?
The freeze-thaw cycle is the primary threat. Water that penetrates concrete expands when it freezes, creating pressure inside the concrete matrix. Over many cycles, this pops aggregate out of the surface, opens cracks, and causes delamination. Proper mix design with air entrainment, adequate cover over the rebar, and a penetrating sealer applied after cure are the primary defenses. We account for all of these on every residential project.
Can you match the existing concrete on my property?
Color and texture matching is possible to a degree. Existing concrete weathers over time and no new pour will be an exact match when it is fresh. We can target a similar aggregate, use integral color to approximate the existing tone, and apply the same surface texture. After weathering, the match improves. We are honest about the limits upfront.
Do you offer decorative concrete options?
