Do you handle the prep work yourself?
We handle it all. Topsoil strip, excavation to depth, grading for drainage, and four inches of compacted Class 5 base. We don’t sub the prep out because the prep decides whether your slab holds or cracks.
What reinforcement do you use, and why?
Half-inch steel rebar on sixteen-inch centers, placed on chairs so it sits dead-center in the slab. Wire mesh is cheaper but it lifts during the pour and ends up at the bottom where it does nothing for tensile stress.
How does your concrete hold up to Minnesota winters?
Freeze/thaw survival is engineered, not hoped for. Air-entrained mix, proper cure time before first freeze, control joints within 12 hours, and positive drainage so water never sits on the slab.
Are quotes free, and how long do they take?

Owatonna homeowners use their backyards hard in the short Minnesota summer, and a concrete patio is the foundation of that. Back patios, front walks, pool decks, the apron of an outdoor kitchen, the pad under a hot tub: we pour all of it. The difference between a patio you enjoy for twenty years and one you are repairing in five comes down almost entirely to two things, the base under it and the way water moves off it. Get those right and the finish you choose stays looking new. Get them wrong and no finish will save it once the freeze and thaw goes to work.
Owatonna sits along the Straight River, and the older neighborhoods near it have ground that holds water and drains slowly. On a patio that is a real problem if the slab is poured flat, because standing water against the house in October becomes ice in January, and ice lifts concrete. We pitch a quarter-inch of fall per foot away from the foundation on every patio, then read the yard around it. If the lot grades toward the house, we set the slab to send water sideways and out, and on the wet lots we add a French drain at the high side so the patio is working with the drainage instead of against it.
The base is non-negotiable. Patios crack because the ground under them settles, not because the concrete is weak, so we strip the topsoil, compact four inches of Class 5 in lifts, set the grade with a laser, and pour on something that will not move. Half-inch rebar goes in on chairs so the steel rides dead-center in the slab, where freeze-thaw tensile stress actually pulls. Wire mesh, the cheap option, floats to the bottom during the pour and does nothing once winter starts working the concrete.
Then the finish, which is where a patio earns its keep. A light or heavy broom for grip, stamped slate, ashlar or flagstone for the upgrade, exposed aggregate for texture, integral color or acid stain for warmth. We pour an integral-color sample board before the job so you see the cured color in your own light before the truck ever rolls, because a color that looked right on a phone screen can read completely different once it dries on a hundred square feet. Sealing is available on request and worth it on a stamped or colored patio to hold the color and shed water.

Hot tub and outdoor-kitchen patios run a little longer because of the deeper slab and the rough-in underneath.
