Why slabs settle in Minnesota
Concrete slabs settle when the soil underneath them moves. In southern Minnesota, the primary cause is freeze-thaw cycling. Water in the subgrade expands when it freezes, lifting the slab, then contracts when it thaws, leaving a void. The slab drops into that void and stays there. Erosion, poor compaction during original construction, and tree root disruption are secondary causes we see regularly in the Rochester area.
A sunken slab is not just an eyesore. The trip hazard at a sidewalk joint can trigger liability. A pitched garage floor drains toward the foundation instead of away from it. A sloped patio creates pooling that accelerates concrete surface deterioration. Leveling restores the original drainage plane and eliminates hazards without the disruption of a full tear-out.
Pouring Praises levels concrete slabs using mudjacking, also called slabjacking or pressure grouting. A dense slurry of cement, soil, and water is pumped through small-diameter holes drilled through the slab. The slurry fills voids, consolidates loose subgrade, and lifts the panel back to grade. Holes are patched after. The slab is ready for normal use the same day in most cases.
Not every settled slab is a leveling candidate. Slabs with significant structural cracking, widespread spalling, or settlement caused by buried organic material may be better replaced. We assess every situation honestly and tell you which option makes more sense for your specific slab.
How It Works
The Leveling Process
Slab Assessment
We walk the affected area, probe the settlement extent, look at the crack pattern, and determine whether voids are present. If the slab is structurally sound, we proceed to leveling. If replacement is the better call, we tell you that directly.
Drill and Inject
Small holes are drilled through the slab at calculated positions. A hydraulic pump forces the cement-soil slurry through injection tubes into the void space below. Pressure builds until the slab lifts.
Lift and Level
We monitor the lift in real time, adjusting pressure and injection sequence to bring the panel back to the target grade. Adjoining slabs are checked for alignment as we work.
Patch and Cure
Injection holes are filled with a cement plug that matches the slab surface. The slurry underneath begins setting immediately. Most slabs carry foot traffic the same day and vehicle traffic within 24 hours.

How long does concrete leveling last?
Mudjacking results are permanent in the sense that the injected slurry hardens into a load-bearing mass that does not shrink, compress, or wash away. If the original cause of settlement was freeze-thaw cycling in a poorly drained area, addressing drainage at the same time extends the life of the repair significantly. We discuss drainage as part of every assessment.
Is leveling cheaper than replacing the slab?
In most cases, yes. Mudjacking is typically 50 to 70 percent of the cost of a full tear-out and replacement. The real cost comparison depends on slab size, settlement severity, and subgrade conditions. We give you both numbers after the assessment so you can make an informed decision.
Can you level concrete in winter?
We can work in temperatures above freezing. The slurry mix needs above-freezing conditions to hydrate and set properly. For projects in shoulder-season temperatures, we time pours around forecast windows. Call us and we will give you a realistic schedule based on the current forecast.
What size holes do you drill?
Injection holes are typically 1.5 to 2 inches in diameter. They are placed at regular intervals across the settled area, patched with a cement compound after injection, and are barely noticeable once patched. They do not affect the structural integrity of the slab.
Will the slab settle again after leveling?
The injected slurry fills voids and consolidates loose subgrade, removing the primary mechanism of resettlement. However, if root intrusion, active erosion, or chronic drainage problems caused the original settlement, those conditions need to be corrected. We identify ongoing risk factors during the assessment and advise on them directly.
