Polishing starts with coarse metal-bond diamonds that cut through surface laitance and any previous coatings. We work through progressively finer grits, from 30-grit through 200-grit, before the densifier step. Each pass removes the scratch pattern from the previous pass. Skipping grits creates a surface that looks smooth but scatters light unevenly and shows every imperfection within a month.

Densifier
Lithium silicate hardens the slab from the inside out.
After the medium grits, we apply a lithium silicate densifier that penetrates the concrete and reacts chemically with calcium hydroxide in the paste. The reaction forms calcium silicate hydrate inside the pores, raising the surface hardness by roughly 35 percent. A densified slab resists abrasion and prevents the dusting that untreated polished floors develop over time. This step is what separates a real polish from a grind-and-seal.

Final Seal
800-grit finish: low-sheen or high-gloss, your choice.
Final resin-bond diamond passes at 400 and 800 grit close the surface to the specified sheen. Low-sheen (satin) reads matte in indirect light and hides footprints on garage floors. High-gloss (reflective) reads mirror-bright under shop lighting and is the right choice for showroom floors. Is a polished concrete floor easy to maintain?
Yes. A polished concrete floor needs nothing more than a damp mop and a neutral-pH cleaner. No waxing, no buffing, no yearly sealer. Oil and other liquids bead on the guard coat and wipe up without staining. Salt tracked in from a Kasson winter rinses off without leaving the white haze it leaves on epoxy floors. Annual reapplication of the surface guard coat, which takes an afternoon, is optional but extends the service life of the finish.
Will the polishing work on my existing slab even if it has cracks?
Hairline cracks and control-joint edges grind smooth and become part of the floor’s character rather than an eyesore. Structural cracks wider than three-sixteenths of an inch need to be routed and filled with a semi-rigid epoxy filler before grinding. What is the difference between polished concrete and epoxy?
Polished concrete IS the slab: we mechanically refine the surface of the concrete itself. There is no coating that can peel, chip, or bubble. Epoxy is a coating applied over the slab surface that bonds chemically. Both are durable, but polished concrete is permanent in a way epoxy is not. Epoxy is a better choice when the slab has significant staining or contamination that can not be addressed by grinding. Polishing is better when the slab is in good condition and you want a maintenance-free floor for the long term.
