Questions We Get
Questions we get.
Do you handle the prep work yourself?
We handle it all. Topsoil strip, excavation to depth, grading for drainage, and four inches of compacted Class 5 base. We don’t sub the prep out because the prep decides whether your slab holds or cracks.
What reinforcement do you use, and why?
Half-inch steel rebar on sixteen-inch centers, placed on chairs so it sits dead-center in the slab. Wire mesh is cheaper but it lifts during the pour and ends up at the bottom where it does nothing for tensile stress.
How does your concrete hold up to Minnesota winters?
Freeze/thaw survival is engineered, not hoped for. Air-entrained mix, proper cure time before first freeze, control joints within 12 hours, and positive drainage so water never sits on the slab.
Are quotes free, and how long do they take?
A quote never costs anything. We walk the site with you and send a written quote in a few days, itemized by prep, reinforcement, concrete, and finish. No pressure, no upsell.
What happens if something goes wrong after the pour?
We’re insured and bonded, and we stand behind our workmanship. You call us and we come look at it. You call us and we come look at it. We’re based in Rochester and we’re not going anywhere.
Pouring In Mower County
Hog, dairy and shop floors.
Mower County is working land. Austin anchors it, the Hormel town along the Cedar River near the I-90 corridor, and around it the prairie spreads flat through Adams, Brownsdale, Grand Meadow, Dexter and LeRoy. This is hog and dairy country with grain in between, and the flat ground means most of what we pour here carries weight rather than fights a slope. We get called for feedlot pads, push walls, feed bunk slabs, machine shed floors and the big reinforced pads a hog or dairy operation runs equipment across day after day.
There is plenty of residential work too. Austin and the smaller towns want driveways, garage floors, patios and sidewalks that look clean and hold up, and we pour those to the same standard as a commercial shop floor. The flat lay is a gift on drainage. We do not have to wrestle a hillside, so we build the slope into the grade on purpose and set the joints to move water off the slab and away from the building before the first freeze locks it in for the season.
The Cedar River bottoms and the open prairie both take the full force of a southern-Minnesota winter, which is why the base is non-negotiable. We strip topsoil, compact four inches of Class 5, and tie in half-inch rebar on chairs so the steel sits dead-center and the pad acts as one piece under load. From Austin out to Grand Meadow and LeRoy, call us and we will come walk it. The quote is free, written, and itemized so you see exactly what each part costs.
We pour a lot in Mower County because it is close, the ground is straightforward, and the operations here know the difference between concrete that holds and concrete that does not. That suits us. We would rather earn a hog or dairy producer’s repeat business by building one pad that lasts than chase volume with thin slabs that crack by spring. Pedro answers the phone himself and is the one standing on the pour, so the person who quotes your feedlot pad or driveway is the person who builds it. Every job is insured and bonded and carries a written workmanship warranty. To plan a pour anywhere from Austin to LeRoy, call (507) 735-8820 or use our contact page and we will set a time to come out.
Hog and dairy concrete is a specialty unto itself, and Mower County keeps us deep in it. The slabs that go under livestock take abuse that a driveway never sees: constant animal and equipment traffic, manure, wash water, and the acids that come with all of it, working on the concrete every single day. A pad built thin or finished too slick is both a maintenance headache and a safety problem for the animals, while one with poor drainage rots from the moisture that never leaves it. We size these slabs to the real loads, build the drainage so liquids run off and away instead of pooling, and finish for traction in the areas where animals walk. That is the kind of flatwork a producer cannot afford to get wrong, and it is exactly the work we are built to do right.
Stewartville sits at the northern edge of the county closest to Rochester, and it gives us a different rhythm of work than the Austin end. As a growing town within easy commuting reach, Stewartville keeps us pouring new-construction driveways, garage floors, sidewalks, and patios for families putting down roots, plus the occasional acreage and small-farm slab just outside town. Being so close to our shop, a Stewartville job is one we can schedule fast and come back to easily. Whether the work is a residential driveway up north or a feedlot pad down toward the Iowa line, the approach is identical.
That consistency is the whole point. Across the spread of Mower County, from the Hormel-anchored heart of Austin to the small farm towns scattered over the prairie, the owner takes your call, drives out to walk the site himself, and puts a free written quote in your hands within a few days with prep, steel, concrete, and finish each on its own line. Insured, bonded, and warranted in writing, the same on a Stewartville driveway as on a Grand Meadow hog barn floor. Have us out and we will tell you straight what your pour needs and what it will cost.
