What Every Pour Includes

The spec does not change because the job is in Kasson.

01

Drain & Grade

Water runs away from the house. Every time.

Positive drainage is the first thing we set. A patio that pitches toward the foundation pushes water into basements every spring thaw. We set the grade during forming, verify with a level, and do not pour until drainage is right. A Kasson winter on a mis-graded patio is a one-way trip to heaving.

02

Reinforcement

Half-inch rebar is standard on every patio.

Wire mesh migrates to the bottom of a wet pour where it does no mechanical work. We use half-inch steel rebar on chairs so it stays centered in the slab. That is where it has to be to resist the tensile stress that freeze-thaw cycling applies to every patio slab in Dodge County every March.

03

Finish Options

Broom, exposed aggregate, or stampable overlay.

Broom finish is the workhorse: grip in all weather, easy to maintain, holds up to snow blowers and furniture. Exposed aggregate adds visual texture and grip without stamps or color. A stampable overlay on an existing sound slab can upgrade appearance without a full tear-out. We match the finish to how the patio will actually be used.

Questions We Get

Kasson homeowners ask us.

Will my patio drain properly after the pour?

That depends on the grade we set during forming, not on the pour itself. We verify positive drainage away from the house before any concrete goes down. A Kasson patio that pools water near the foundation creates basement moisture problems and accelerates freeze-thaw cracking at the house edge. Drainage is the first spec we confirm, not the last.

Do I need a permit for a concrete patio in Kasson?

Most residential patios do not require a permit in Kasson, but some locations near property lines, easements, or drainage swales may. We check the city requirements before we start and pull any necessary permits as part of the project. Nothing gets poured until the paperwork is right.

How large can a poured concrete patio be?

There is no practical upper limit on size for a poured concrete patio, but larger slabs require more saw-cut control joints to manage crack location. A 400 square-foot patio needs four or five joints; a 1,000 square-foot patio might need eight or more. Joint spacing is sized to the slab dimensions, not to aesthetics. Contact us and we can walk through the layout before the pour.

Should I get a stamped patio or a plain concrete patio?

Plain broom-finish concrete is lower cost, lower maintenance, and holds up better to snow blowers and outdoor furniture than stamped. Stamped is a better choice when the patio is primarily visual and furniture-covered. Exposed aggregate is a good middle option: more visual interest than plain broom, less maintenance than stamped color. We can show you samples of all three at the site visit.

Can you install a patio during a Minnesota winter?

Concrete can be poured in cold weather with proper precautions: heated blankets, heated mix water, and wind protection at the slab edge. We pour through October in Kasson on a case-by-case basis depending on the forecast. If overnight lows will drop below 20 degrees Fahrenheit in the first three days after the pour, we push the job to spring rather than risk the slab. We will tell you straight if a pour date is risky.

How long before I can put furniture on my new Kasson patio?

Foot traffic is fine after about seven days, and that is when most homeowners move the furniture and grill back on. The concrete keeps gaining strength for a full twenty-eight days, so we ask you to hold off on anything really heavy, like a loaded planter cluster or a hot tub, until the end of that window. We walk you through the cure schedule the day we pour, and everything you need to stay off is spelled out before we leave the site.

Do you set the patio joints so they do not cut across my seating area?

Yes, and it is one of the first things we plan. Every patio needs saw-cut control joints so the slab cracks on a line instead of across the open field, but where those lines fall is a choice. We chalk the patio out on the ground before we dig, then set the joints to run along the edges of your seating and grill zones or line up with a step, so they read as part of the layout rather than a seam under the table. It costs nothing extra and it is the kind of detail you notice every evening you use the space.

Patios In Kasson

Room to spread out.

Kasson has been building out fast, and the newer homes going up around town come with the kind of deeper backyards that make room for a real patio. We pour generous back patios, wraparound spaces, fire-pit pads and the outdoor-living layouts that take advantage of a yard that has not been squeezed into a Rochester lot line. With more square footage comes a bigger job for the base, because the larger the slab, the more places a thin or poorly compacted base can let it settle and crack. We compact four inches of Class 5 across the whole footprint and lay out the slab on the ground before we dig so the control joints land on your sightlines, not across the seating area.

The thing we never skip is the fall. Every patio gets a quarter-inch of pitch per foot away from the house, so meltwater leaves the slab instead of pooling against the foundation to freeze. In the newer Kasson developments the yards are freshly graded and the fill is still settling, so we probe the ground and set the pitch to carry water around and out, adding a channel drain where a lot grades back toward the home. Half-inch rebar on chairs holds it all together through the freeze and thaw.

Finish is yours: broom, stamped, exposed aggregate, or integral color mixed on a sample board so you see it cured first. Call us out to your Kasson patio and we will walk the space, talk through layout and finish, and hand you a free written quote with every line spelled out.

The deeper backyards on the newer Kasson lots open the door to more than a plain rectangle, and a lot of our patio calls here turn into outdoor-living layouts. A raised seating pad tied to a lower fire-pit apron, a run of concrete that wraps from the back door around to a grilling zone, a broad slab sized for a table and a couch and still room to walk behind them. When a patio grows into a shape like that, the base work grows with it, because a big irregular slab has more low corners for water to find and more base to keep from settling unevenly. We form these in sections that share a clean cold joint, compact the full footprint, and set the pitch so every part of the layout still sheds water away from the house. Thinking through the whole space before we dig is what keeps a large patio from becoming a large repair.

Kasson is a straight shot west on Highway 14 from our Rochester shop, close enough that scheduling a patio here is simple and following up is easy. A patio takes the weather head-on against the foundation, so the fall that carries water away from the house and a base that keeps the slab from heaving are the two things we get right before we pour. The visit is free, the quote is itemized, and Pedro is the one who walks the yard, pours it, and stands behind it. Call (507) 735-8820 or reach us through the contact page.
