It takes 30 seconds, uses a 12-inch metal cone and a tape measure, and tells us whether the load is what we ordered. Reject the wrong slump and we save the slab. Accept it and we hope. Here is what slump means, what 5-inch slump tells us, and what we reject at the truck.
What a Slump Test Actually Measures
The slump test is the field measure of concrete consistency. We fill a standardized metal cone (12 inches tall, 8-inch base, 4-inch top) with concrete in three lifts, rodding 25 times between lifts, then lift the cone straight up and let the concrete settle. We measure how far the top of the pile drops below where the top of the cone was. That measurement, in inches, is the slump.
What slump correlates with: water content. A high-slump concrete has more water relative to cement. A low-slump concrete has less. Water-to-cement ratio is the single biggest driver of concrete strength, so slump is a proxy for what the cured strength will be.
The standardized test is ASTM C143 and every working concrete contractor in southern Minnesota knows what the cone looks like and what the measurements mean. If your contractor does not run slump tests at the truck, you should be asking why.
The Slump Number and What It Tells Us
For a typical residential pour we are looking at 3 to 5 inches of slump.
- 1-3 inches: stiff mix. Hard to place, hard to finish, but high strength. We use 1-3 inch slump on pavement work, on slabs that need to be hand-floated immediately, and on slopes where the concrete needs to hold form.
- 3-5 inches: standard residential. What we pour on most driveways, patios, and garage floors. Workable enough for finishers, not so wet that we lose strength.
- 5-7 inches: high slump. Easier to place in forms with tight reinforcement, used for foundation walls and footings. Higher water content means slightly lower strength.
- 7-9 inches: very wet. Almost a self-leveling consistency. We do not pour residential slabs at this slump because the strength loss is too much.
- 9+ inches: rejected. If the slump comes out of the cone at 9 or 10 inches, the mix has been over-watered. We send the truck back.
For a residential Byron driveway pour, we order a 4-inch target slump from the ready-mix plant. The truck arrives, we run the test, and if we are at 3 to 5 inches we pour. If we are above 5 we wait for the truck to mix down. If we are above 6 we reject and send the truck back for re-batching.
Why Slump Drifts at the Truck
The slump that arrives at your site is rarely the exact slump that left the plant. Heat, time-in-the-drum, and aggregate moisture all push it around. Common drift sources:
- Hot day, long drive from the plant: water evaporates from the mix, slump comes down. The driver compensates by adding water at the truck, which raises slump but also raises water-to-cement ratio.
- Cold day, short drive: mix arrives stiffer than batched. The driver may add water, same problem.
- Operator adding water on-site to “make it pourable”: this is the danger. Every gallon of water the driver adds at the truck lowers the cured strength of the slab. Acceptable additions are typically limited to a few gallons per cubic yard.
The point of the slump test at the truck is to catch over-watered loads before they hit the slab. Once the concrete is on the ground, the water-to-cement ratio is fixed.
What We Reject and Why
We reject a load when:
- Slump is above the target by more than 2 inches and the driver cannot justify it. This usually means too much water added at the truck.
- The mix shows signs of segregation: the cone test produces a wet pile of cement on the bottom with aggregate poking out the top. The water has separated from the solids.
- The mix is past the time-in-the-drum window (typically 90 minutes from batching for standard mixes, less on hot days). After this, the cement has started its initial set and the slab will not finish properly.
- The mix is not what we ordered: wrong air content, wrong strength class, missing color or admixture. We verify the batch ticket against the order before we accept.
Rejecting a load costs the contractor time and the ready-mix plant a pour. But pouring an out-of-spec load costs you a driveway that fails in year five. We reject.
What This Means for the Homeowner
You do not need to understand the chemistry of slump to know whether your contractor takes it seriously. Watch the pour. If the crew is doing field QC at the truck, pulling a sample, running a cone, reading a batch ticket, they are running the job properly. If the chute starts the moment the truck stops, you are paying for whatever the driver delivered.
